Montreal, June 18, 2014 — Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) joins other pro-human rights organizations across Canada in support of the continued showing of the “Invisible” exhibition at Ottawa city hall. Invisible calls attention – through art – to the thousands of Palestinians who have died premature and obscure deaths under Israeli military occupation. In the Palestinian-Canadian artist’s own words, Invisible is “a protest in honour of remembrance” of her people and homeland.

“Ottawa city hall and the curators of the exhibition space should not be cowed into censoring this work,” says Thomas Woodley, president of CJPME. CJPME observes that a number of organizations supporting Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories have sought to misrepresent Nazzal’s exhibition. This, apparently, to distract from the portrayal of Palestinian suffering and disenfranchisement central to the exhibition. CJPME joins other organizations to insist that the Charter rights of Ms. Nazzal to express herself artistically through her exhibition be respected.
