CJPME is looking for a highly motivated individual who is passionate about CJPME’s human rights mission and who wants to play a major role in the growth and influence of CJPME.

CJPME is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to empower Canadians of all backgrounds to promote justice, development and peace in the Middle East, and here at home in Canada.  CJPME is a national, independent, non-partisan Canadian organization at the forefront of promoting human rights and justice for all peoples in the Middle East, especially for Palestinians. 

CJPME is a small organization requiring a versatile individual who can creatively contribute in multiple roles. The position requires skills in activism, organizing, advocacy, policy development, public relations and communications.  Bi- or trilingual candidates will have an advantage, as part of CJPME’s constituency is French-speaking and Arabic-speaking.   The qualified individual will report to CJPME’s President.

Job Description:

  • Activism
    • Assist in all aspects of the work of launching and supporting human rights campaigns and/or demonstrations
    • Organize meetings/events/press conferences with the public, media, partners and volunteers, to socialize the organization’s policies and campaigns
    • Be able to speak publicly of the organization, its mandate, and its focal areas
    • Represent the organization at community events, occasionally outside office hours
  • Communications
    • Assist in all aspects of the work of launching and supporting social media communications
    • Support the successful rollout of and engagement with organizational campaigns
    • Help develop outgoing communications with the public and others
    • Help maintain organizational platforms for policy campaigns and related
  • Advocacy
    • Assist in the development of strategic policies, in various written/graphic formats, that meet advocacy needs, targeting potentially politicians, media, or the general public
    • Represent the organization to politicians, media, or the general public to articulate and socialize the organization’s policies and campaigns
    • Support the organization’s advocacy work – involving staff, volunteers, and partners – to collectively carry out advocacy policy
  • Public Relations
    • Develop strategic relationships at various levels with partners, allies, the media and politicians to promote the work and mandate of the organization
    • Liaise with elected officials, partners, supporters and volunteers
    • Help organize events involving elected officials, the public, partners and volunteers
    • Help develop communications, brochures, promotional videos, or other vehicles for relationship building and messaging
  • Management and Administration
    • Carry out personnel administration, orientation and management of junior staff
    • Support some of the administrative processes of the organization as required
    • Maintain and update organizational processes and templates
  • Bilingual Candidates: Translation review work
    • Review translation outputs prior to publishing

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate would have the following qualifications:

  • Experience and education
    • Minimum 3 years professional experience with roles involving the above skills
    • University or post-secondary education
  • Communications and writing skills
    • Native language skills in English, spoken and written
    • Ability to write professional, well-structured, persuasive texts of various lengths
    • Strong public speaking ability
    • Language skills in French and Arabic would also be an asset
  • Knowledge
    • Strong knowledge of international humanitarian law, and international human rights law.
    • Strong academic knowledge of Middle East history, culture and politics.
    • Understanding of Canadian politics, and experience communicating with elected representatives.
  • Technology and platform skills
    • Solid, hands-on, office experience, with strong experience with all Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
    • Advanced-level familiarity with common social media platforms: e.g. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tiktok, LinkedIn.
    • Experience working creatively with many different media platforms and tools (e.g. social media, Websites, on-line tools, video/audio, podcasts, etc.)
  • Personality traits
    • High integrity and passionate drive for human rights, especially Palestinian human rights
    • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, and program development
    • Excellent customer relations skills, in-person and over the phone/Zoom
    • Skills to collaborate with and motivate volunteers
  • Willingness to work flexible hours as needed
