CJPME is looking for a highly motivated individual who is passionate about CJPME’s mission and who wants to play a major role in the growth and influence of CJPME, especially with the media and the general public.

CJPME is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to empower Canadians of all backgrounds to promote justice, development and peace in the Middle East, especially Palestine. CJPME is a national, independent, non-partisan Canadian organization at the forefront of promoting human rights and justice for all peoples in the Middle East, and Canadians of Middle East origin. 

CJPME is a small organization requiring a versatile individual who can creatively contribute in multiple roles. The position requires skills in media, communications and public relations. Bilingual candidates will have an advantage, as part of CJPME’s constituency is uni-lingual French. The qualified individual will report to CJPME’s President.

Job Description:

  • Social Media Channels Development
    • Help drive CJPME’s day-to-day social media strategy and implementation on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other platforms.
    • Identify new social media opportunities through which to engage Canadians.
    • Manage and evolve new social media opportunities for the organization.
    • Define and recruit new audiences for new organizational channels.
    • Involve the grassroots in the definition, shaping, promotion and participation with social media channels.
    • Drive channel and platform administration and promotion.
  • Traditional Media Channels Development
    • Help manage our advocacy work with traditional media.
    • Help build relationships with journalists in traditional media.
    • Manage and evolve traditional media opportunities for the organization.
    • Define and recruit new audiences in our advocacy with traditional media.
  • Media Monitoring 
    • Help perform CJPME’s day-to-day media monitoring.
    • Help oversee CJPME’s day-to-day response to poor journalism on our issues.
    • Follow-up with media in response to poor journalism on our issues.
    • Help drive CJPME’s overall strategy to address poor journalism on our issues.
  • Organizational Communications
    • Draft media releases and media advisories to convey the organization’s perspective on current events to the media and offer organizational spokespeople for interviews.
    • Guide and/or support social media communications, by developing the written/visual communications, and by supporting the successful rollout and engagement with these communications.
    • Provide advocacy and policy guidance supporting the successful rollout of and engagement with organizational campaigns.
    • Help maintain communications platforms for policy campaigns and related.
  • Policy Promotion
    • Represent the organization to politicians, media, or the general public to articulate and socialize the organization’s policies and campaigns.
    • Help develop communications, brochures, promotional videos, or other vehicles for relationship building and messaging.
    • Be able to speak publicly of the organization, its mandate, and its focal areas.
    • Assist in the promotion of organizational policies and publications to campus and community groups.
  • Bonus for Bilingual Candidates
    • Perform functions above as appropriate to both English- and French-speaking audiences
    • Review automated translation outputs prior to publishing

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate would have the following qualifications:

  • Experience and education
    • Minimum 3 years professional experience with roles involving the above skills
    • University or post-secondary education
  • Communication and writing skills
    • Native language skills (or equivalent) in English, spoken and written
    • Ability to write professional, well-structured, persuasive texts of various lengths
    • Strong public speaking ability
    • Language skills in French and Arabic would also be an asset
  • Technology and platform skills
    • Solid, hands-on, office experience, with all Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
    • Solid, hands-on, office experience, with Google docs/sheets/slides/forms
    • Advanced-level familiarity with common social media platforms: e.g. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tiktok, LinkedIn.
    • Experience working creatively with many different media platforms and tools (e.g. social media, Websites, on-line tools, video/audio, podcasts, etc.)
  • Knowledge
    • Strong knowledge of international humanitarian law, and international human rights law.
    • Strong academic knowledge of Middle East history, culture and politics.
    • Understanding of Canadian politics, and experience communicating with elected representatives
  • Personality traits
    • A nice person, easy to get along with
    • High integrity and passionate drive for human rights, especially Palestinian human rights
    • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, and program development
    • Excellent customer relations skills, in-person and over the phone/Zoom
    • Skills to collaborate with and motivate volunteers
    • Team player keen to work collaboratively with others
    • Willingness to work flexible hours as needed
