Anti-Racism Research and Campaigns Director

CJPME is looking for highly motivated individual who is passionate about CJPME’s mission and who wants to play a major role in the impact and influence of CJPME.  

The successful candidate is someone who is an expert on anti-racism, and who can serve as CJPME’s lead on anti-Palestinian racism (APR), anti-Arab racism, and Islamophobia. The successful individual should be able to animate campaigns, projects and research initiatives, and lead and inspire others.

CJPME is a small organization requiring a versatile individual who can creatively contribute in multiple roles. The position requires strong skills in research, alliance-building, education, and advocacy.  Bilingual candidates will have an advantage, as part of CJPME’s constituency is unilingual French.  The qualified individual will report to CJPME’s President and will work closely with CJPME’s Director of Policy and Senior Director of Parliamentary Affairs.

Job Description:

  • Anti-Racism Research and Analysis Leadership
    • Develop a comprehensive research program aligned with CJPME’s anti-racist strategies. This would focus foremost on anti-Palestinian racism (APR), but would also touch on anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia in Canada.
    • Ensure that CJPME’s annual audit and report on anti-Palestinian racism in Canada proceeds intentionally and credibly.
    • Deliver written analyses of varying lengths that help CJPME advance its campaign strategies as well as its policy and research plans on anti-Palestinian racism, anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia.
    • Analyze current events and trends in racism in their historical context. Predict needs and identify strategic avenues that CJPME can pursue in its anti-racist work.
  • Anti-Racism Partnerships and Communications
    • Participate in and lead civil society forums with allied organizations to ensure the widest possible reach and impact of CJPME’s anti-racist work.
    • Build relationships with labour organizations, law firms, and legal institutions to provide support to Canadian victims of APR, anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia.
    • Develop relationships and collaborate with anti-racism educators in school boards and other institutions.
    • Work with school boards, universities, governments and other institutions to ensure that APR, anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia are reflected in the appropriate EDI frameworks.
    • Become CJPME’s prime media contact for questions and comment on APR, anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia.
  • Anti-Racism Campaigns and Political Advocacy
    • Be able to lead anti-racism initiatives and campaigns with entrepreneurial drive, collaborating closely with CJPME coworkers.
    • Work with CJPME’s Senior Director of Parliamentary Affairs to develop policies and strategies to reach and influence politicians and policymakers at all levels of government.
    • Acquire skills to initiate, lead, and execute all aspects of CJPME end-to-end digital actions toolkit to expand reach and impact of CJPME’s APR campaigns. Help maintain and update platforms for organizational campaigns and communications.
    • Help develop CJPME’s anti-racism communications strategies and content (written/visual)
    • Help develop outgoing communications with elected officials and the public.
  • Anti-Racism Education
    • Develop educational curricula around CJPME’s anti-racist strategies that can be proposed to partners and targets
    • Develop educational materials around CJPME’s anti-racist strategies that can be delivered to different audiences, including for children, students, and professional forums.
    • Evaluate existing educational curricula and materials, and provide assessments and recommendations.
  • Vision, Mentorship and Coordination
    • Envision and implement a holistic anti-racism program for CJPME that earns goodwill from donors/allies and self-funds in the long-term.
    • Supervise, guide, and orient junior staff
    • Support the interviewing and hiring of junior staff and/or interns
    • Cultivate and manage relations with volunteers and local leaders
    • Manage, maintain, and update organizational processes and templates

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate would have the following qualifications:

  • Experience and education
    • Minimum 5 years professional experience with roles involving the above skills
    • University degree with a strong academic background in anti-racism or a closely related field such as applied sociology, politics, applied women and gender studies, Indigenous studies or communications and journalism.
    • Strong volunteer experience in anti-racism initiatives or social justice campaigning
    • Leadership in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives both within and beyond campus environments.
  • Communication and writing skills
    • Native language skills (or equivalent) in English, spoken and written
    • Ability to write professional, well-structured, persuasive texts of various lengths
    • Ability to strategically balance appeals to values with a strong grounding in evidence
    • Strong public speaking ability
  • Technology and platform skills
    • Solid, hands-on, office experience, with all Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
    • Solid, hands-on, office experience, with Google docs/sheets/slides/forms
    • Strong familiarity with common social media platforms: e.g. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tiktok, LinkedIn.
    • Experience working creatively with many different media platforms and tools (e.g. social media, Websites, on-line tools, video/audio, podcasts, etc.)
  • Knowledge
    • Strong knowledge of anti-racism, racism, and settler colonialism in Canada and Palestine-Israel
    • Ideally, lived experience of anti-Palestinian racism, anti-Arab racism or Islamophobia
    • Understanding of Canadian politics, and experience communicating with elected representatives.
  • Personality traits
    • High integrity and passionate drive for human rights, especially Palestinian human rights
    • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, and program development
    • Excellent customer relations skills, in-person and over the phone/Zoom
    • Skills to collaborate with and motivate volunteers
    • Team player keen to work collaboratively with others
    • Willingness to work flexible hours as needed
