Neil Young: We, the undersigned, implore you to cancel your concert in Israel planned for this summer, and to refrain from booking further concerts in Israel until it complies fully with the demands of the international BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaign.  By doing so, you will be supporting the human rights of the Palestinian people, and hastening a just and peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

MORE INFO:

Like many Canadians and fans internationally, CJPME was extremely surprised and disappointed when an Israeli promoter announced that Neil Young was scheduled to play a concert in Israel in July 2014.  Given Mr. Young's progressive stances on many other issues, including his very recent and public support of Canadian First Nations peoples, his decision to perform in Israel is very perplexing.

In 2005, a coalition of over 170 Palestinian civil society organizations launched a campaign calling the international community to boycott Israel culturally, academically, and commercially.  As conceived, the boycott will end when Israel recognizes the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and fully complies with international law in Israel and in the Palestinian territories it currently occupies illegally.  Elvis Costello, Stevie Wonder, Vanessa Paradis, Gil Scott-Heron and many other performing artists cancelled their performances in Israel in respect for this call.

For more information about the BDS call, see CJPME's "Why Boycott Israel" factsheet, CJPME's BDS talking points, and CJPME's justification for the cultural boycott of Israel.

I wish to add my name to the thousands asking you not to perform is Israel this summer. I have always admired and enjoyed your music, especially those songs that deal with a social message. Also I have admired your stance against many social ills including most recently the oil sands project in Alberta with all its associated problems. Please heed the many messages to continue your strong stance against injustice by supporting the BDS campaign efforts and not performing in an apartheid state. Your name would lend a giant boost to this effort and encourage many other artists of conscience not to participate in the ethnic cleansing of the native people of Palestine.
